Music at the Market
The main priority of the Lexington Farmers’ Market is to provide a space for local farmers and producers to sell agricultural products. Historically, part of creating a pleasant atmosphere for our space has been the inclusion of non-profit groups, musicians, street entertainers, and local performers.
However, entertainers and musicians can be a liability to the market. For example, having performers can become problematic when unsupervised minors are present playing music, songs and content aren’t appropriate for a family setting, large numbers of performers are present, performers block walkways, or performers are unfamiliar with public domain vs copyrighted music (or other material). The issue of performing copyrighted material is particularly important because musicians can unwittingly subject the farmers’ market to a range of legal actions by breaking copyright laws.
All musicians and performers MUST sign a release and waiver in order to busk, play, or perform at any of the Lexington Farmers’ Market locations. Failure to comply with guidelines and policies or and/or failure to sign the paperwork will result in immediate removal of the performer from the market area.
Musicians and performers may email info@lexingtonfarmersmarket.com to receive a copy of the waiver and to schedule an appearance.
Musicians and performers are expected to follow the demeanor guidelines as listed below. Additionally, musicians and performers that schedule appearances will be assigned to a designated area. Performers and Musicians may collect tips, but there is no compensation provided by the market, and the market generally does not hire any paid performers.
Demeanor at the Farmers’ Market
- Performers must be fully-clothed and dressed appropriately for a family event.
- No crude or offensive subject matter (as deemed so by market staff)
- Performers and content may not encourage or portray illegal actives.
- No electronic amplification is permitted.
- No excessively loud or disruptive instrumentation (such as heavy percussion or loud horns).
- Minors must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
- Activities that interfere with market members’ ability to communicate with customers is prohibited.
- Cooperation with farmers’ market staff is required.
- Musicians may not sell goods but may have their own music available for purchase.
- Walkways, loading areas, and other essential spaces may not be blocked.
Long-term Plans
The Lexington Farmers’ Market hopes to launch a summer concert series in the coming years in collaboration with Tahlsound Festival.
In the event of live performance at the surrounding businesses, the Lexington Farmers’ Market may restrict live performances in its footprint.
